This painting stemmed from a quick trip to the coast. The scene was very beautiful and ominous. I'm not sure if I really captured the feeling but these low, dark, overhanging clouds were just hovering over the harbor while this small sailboat made preparations to dock.

January has been a busy month in the studio and some good artistic opportunities are lining up for the next three months. Specifically, exhibit opportunities. I'll post more about it as the details start coming together.

A creative buddy of mine gave me a sketchbook as a Christmas gift this year.

One Sketch A Day: a visual journal. It's not a regular sketchbook, it's marked from day one to day 366. So I guess it would actually be 366 days of sketching.

Anyway, I'm usually sketching every day... but not in one book. So, I was thrilled with this. I see this not only as a method to keep my sketching chops going but also as a great resource for painting ideas as well. Sharing sketches is something that I'm not really comfortable doing... I know some of these are going to be crap and a bit revealing on what's on my mind any given day. But that's why we sketch right? To work out solutions, compositions, problems.

The holiday season was absolutely awesome and It's been a good first week of 2012. I made sure to get the year started off right by going to a place that good for my soul... the coast. Great friends, good food, good times... and awesome weather! I was able to paint outside or at least on the screened porch the entire time.

So many blessings come to us disguised as curses. It's up to us to see beyond and turn them around. 2011 has been a roller coaster ride to put it mildly. Not only for myself but for a lot of my friends, family and colleagues. But my optimistic side knows there are bigger and better things right around the corner. Just follow your bliss... do what makes you happy. And things start to line up. Sometimes I call bullsh*t on this belief of mine but it does work for the most part.

Commissions and Inspiration

October has kept me busy with commissioned paintings and freelance design work. Both of which I truly enjoy. That means, however, that I'm spending my nights at the easel creating my personal work. When I heard that 16 Patton Gallery in Asheville, NC was having an opening reception for a group show this past Saturday, I decided on a road trip for much needed inspiration.

The show features the work of Karen Hollingsworth, Karin Jurick, and Suzy Schultz. All were exhibiting phenomenal work. I've been following the work of Karen and Karin for many years now after originally finding their work through Neil Hollingsworth's blog, Karen's husband, who also is an extraordinary artist.

Karin, Karen and Neil were in attendance and it was such a pleasure talking "art" with them. They were all very gracious with their time. The gallery had several of their books available, so I couldn't resist picking up Karin's "Museum Hours" book. If you love art, this is worth getting!

I've returned from the gorgeous fall mountains of Asheville, newly inspired with fuel for my creative fire... ready to get back to the easel!

This is a small acrylic painting from this past spring... this one and many others are the inspiration for new paintings this fall. I'm not giving up my coastal scenes... just expanding my horizons. I'll be attending several coastal art shows in the next two months plus counting on a lot of painting and creating time in the studio... we'll see where this inspiration leads.

I'm slowly easing into the fall season preparing for a couple of festivals this month. Saturday Sept. 10th I'll have my tent set up at the Archdale Heritage Festival from 9am - 4pm. Then on Saturday Sept. 24th I'll be showing my works at the saxart river-walk juried art festival from 10am - 6pm.

Needless to say there's a lot of activity in the studio this week. But it's fun. I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't!

There are times when everyone questions where they are in their life and if they've made the right decisions. I think it comes down to being grateful for what you do have at the current moment. And right now I'm certainly grateful for a wonderful client and friend who hired me to create the painting shown above. It has been a busy couple of weeks in the studio with this current painting and also preparing for some upcoming festivals in September. And I've been working on my new 2012 Coastal Impressions calendar which features my paintings from the last year. It's currently available for pre-order here.

Life Drawing & Studio Time

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend a two hour drawing session with the local arts guild. About eight of us set up our chairs and easels around the model for a good vantage point. It had been a few months since doing some life drawing so this was a good challenge for me. We started off with several 5 minute poses, then a few 10 minute poses and then closing with two 20 minute poses. The drawing wasn't the challenge... just staying focused for that long was the challenge for me...lol!!

Currently, I have a commissioned painting on the easel I'm happy to say!! I'll be able to show it off once my client views the final and approves everything... fingers crossed :)))

I enjoy sunrises almost as much as I do sunsets. This painting was inspired by an early morning walk around Silver Lake Harbor in Ocracoke, NC. The morning sun just barely making it's way above the trees allowed the clouds to capture it's brilliant colors. Oh yeah, it had to be a painting!

Well, last night I did something that I don't normally do. A good friend and mentor (my art instructor from middle school years) invited me to join a group of artists for an outdoor drawing session. It felt good to be outside working alongside other like-minded people.

The local arts guild holds a drawing/painting session once or twice a month and this is right up my alley!! Before the session was over, two sketches were complete and I'm now inspired with new painting ideas. So, take my word for it... it's good to get out of the studio!

It's really hard to believe how quickly the month of June flew by! The month started off attending the Ocrafolk festival. Which was a lot of fun for everyone involved. As for the rest of the month, I've spend quality time in the studio cleaning, clearing and uncluttering! And of course creating new paintings.

This one came from a sketch from one of my older sketchbooks. I wanted to capture a really dark night scene... where the lights from across the harbor reflect off of the boat and the little house.

Back on track...

controlled chaos

After a week of dealing with a busted computer, I think we're back on track! This past Tuesday, my laptop's hard drive crashed... hard. Thankfully most of my art files have been backed up. The only thing lost was the past month's worth of work. Frustrating, yes. Devastating, no. So, one new hard drive and a few days later, we're back on track.

The reception for my show at NWRCAC.org went wonderfully. So many people came to show their support. It was great to reacquaint with people I haven't seen in years. That was a wonderful start for the new season.

Happily, I'm in the studio working on the next series of works for an upcoming art festival in April, plus new works for my galleries for Spring and Summer.

All the paintings for my upcoming show have been hung. The hard work is done... now all I have to do is show up for the reception. That shouldn't be too hard, I hope :)

There are eighteen pieces in this show and I think I've covered all of the bases as far as representing what I paint. There are coastal scenes along with downtown scenes... I love em both :)

The exhibit space is intimate but certainly enough room to stand back and get a good view of the larger pieces.

I will certainly have more to share after the reception this coming Sunday. In the meantime... I have some canvases that need my attention!

I'm currently in the final stages of getting paintings ready for a show presented by the local arts council. The studio is in major disarray... it looks like a canvas massacre. But that's the joy of having dedicated studio space... I can leave everything at night, return in the morning and just pick up where I left off. There are a couple more paintings that I hope to complete for the show. Just keeping my fingers crossed they'll be dry by the time they hang!!

This will be fun for me because this is my first opportunity to show my work on a local level. Which means family and friends will be able to come by and see the latest artworks and say hey!

Studio Madness... and 70 degrees in January

It's been getting a little crazy here in the studio. A really good kind of crazy. I'm getting paintings ready for a local show here in town. And we're hanging in two weeks with a reception on the 20th of February. Then right after that I'll have about six weeks to prepare for an art festival I'll be attending in April. So, I'm getting in a lot of studio time... but it's really tough to stay in on a day like today. Sunny and 70˚!!! So yeah, I've been taking lots of breaks :)

Marathon sketching

I think sketching is about my favorite part of the creative process. I'm not sure if it has to do with my graphics background, but I love building the composition.. it's sort of like making a blueprint before the painting begins. Today though, I think the muse wants me to work overtime. About five new ideas came to me today and I've sketched out four of them. So, yeah... it's going to be a busy week.

Also this week, I started on my largest painting to date... two feet by four feet on gallery wrapped canvas... this was just after finishing the 5x5 inch painting pictured above. Yeah, I must be nuts. Lauren Maurer of Lauren's Paint Palette was gracious to send one of her reference photos. She knew I liked boats so this was perfect!

Rather than calling them New Years "Resolutions", I like calling them Deliberate Intentions... it's more empowering and sounds like you mean business.

2010 was a very interesting year. Speaking from a personal viewpoint, it was a year of change, a year of making new connections and most of all a year of reflection. What were the choices that I've made that led me to where I am now? And what I discovered was that the majority of those choices were deliberate.

With that said, the choices I'm making now... my deliberate intentions are helping me create my future. And already, 2011 is looking pretty good.

I had the fortunate opportunity to connect with the owner of this skiff, the subject of one of my paintings posted in October. Philip and I have known of each other for a number of years, but I didn't realize this was his skiff. Apparently, it was his father's boat and had been out of the water for over six years... you can read more about it here. He certainly tells the story better than I.

This little painting was from one of my zen moments on the Cedar Island Ferry going to Ocracoke Island, NC. The ferry ride is a little over two hours, so there's plenty of time to sketch... and think. This was a hazy, cloudy day and the deck lights had an inviting glow against the cool steel background.

Brevity is my forté. But I've been thinking about the concept of following your bliss and how that can lead to major changes in your life. So, I thought I'd share my experience to date... then I'll get back to creating something :)

September was an anniversary of sorts.... it was two years ago that my full time gig as an art director came to an end. I had worked for the same company for almost 12 years then the big "R" hit everyone in 2008 (i.e. the recession) so my position in the company was eliminated.

I gotta be honest, though. That was a happy moment. I knew in my heart what my passion was... and all i needed was that nudge out the door. I mean, I love creating whether it's paint on canvas or logo design, I love the process. But this moment meant that I was no longer confined to someone else's schedule. I was free.

The next day I leased a 15x18ft office space to work out of. Moved the easel and drawing table from home to town. It was cramped but I loved it. My hours increased. My pay decreased, working days, nights and weekends. And I still loved it.

And it was one year ago this September that I was able to lease a larger studio space in town! While working full time as an art director, my studio was in a horse barn. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything... however, that made me appreciate the new studio space even more... the new space has a thermostat and storage. It's the little things that count.

Follow your bliss. Go after what you want with unwavering intent. Things will start to line up. Even though things might not look good at the moment... it could be a blessing you haven't discovered.

I was sketching a commercial fishing boat at the Ocracoke ferry docks when i was approached by the owners of this sailboat. After a brief conversation, I found they had purchased one of my original paintings from the local gallery a year earlier. A happy synchronistic moment :)

When I first walked up and saw this scene, I thought "this is a cool boat... this would make a nice painting" At that moment, a dolphin breached the water... in a second it was gone. Guess that kinda sealed the deal for me.

This boat was docked across the causeway from Beaufort, NC (my favorite part of the painting is the seagull taking a break)

How could anyone not love a view like this? This painting was created from one of my sketches at Ocracoke's ferry docks.

I posted this painting here about two months ago using a quick outdoor shot. Here's the newly updated professional color corrected shot. I'm much happier with the color. When reproducing artwork, I always try to get as close to the color as possible. If it doesn't match exactly, I don't fret too much. But I want it close.

Sketching when I'm out doing regular "stuff" (like going to the grocery store or stopping by the local coffee shop) is something that I love to do. Capturing a moment in daily life makes for a perfect painting. There's beautiful composition in everything that surrounds you... it's just a matter of taking a moment to stop and see what's going on.

And yeah... this one is going to become a painting for sure.

Everyone thought we named Hootie after the band Hootie and the Blowfish, which was popular at the time she was rescued as a kitten, around 1995. But she was named Hootie because the spots on her back looked like two huge owl's eyes.

She was the barn cat for 15 years. Very efficient mouser and rodent catcher. (unfortunately a few birds, too) Also very affectionate. She loved to be held and cuddle in your neck... purr and drool. She'd leave great big drool spots on your neck and shirt. Sweet.

Hootie succumbed to kidney disease this past February. Yeah, she's missed and the barn is quiet... except for the sound of new baby birds from a couple nests in the loft.

This past spring, my creative buddy, Teressa, and I were approached by Ocracats of Ocracoke Island to see if we would create a calendar they could sell in the local shops. The funds from the sale of the calendars would help offset costs of several spay/neuter clinics.

Well, the calendars have been a success. We were overwhelmed how well the calendars have been received! Over 100 have been sold with the proceeds going directly to Ocracats!

Ya know the best part about working for yourself is that you get to do a little bit of everything... the worst part is that you get to do a little bit of everything. It does spread you thin but it's so worth the effort. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

One aspect I had to tackle this week is framing. I put on my framer's hat and went to work. The latest pieces (plus a couple older ones) are framed and ready to go to their respective galleries. Now I get to put on my delivery guy hat...

I'll get my artist's hat on this weekend :)

Another one from my outdoor sketching session. I was painting right next to a large inboard houseboat that was named "Palette" and had a logo of a painters palette. I thought "this looks like a good spot to sketch". Once finished, I noticed that the boat was for sale. Hmmm. That would be the most perfect studio, right? The price was posted at over $300,000. I think I'm gonna need to paint more :)

The great thing about painting or sketching on site is the people I meet. While creating this sketch, I had the chance to meet the owners of a sailboat docked nearby. After a brief conversation, I found that they had purchased one of my original paintings from the local gallery a few years ago. A happy synchronistic moment.

Ok, here's another one of those calm, serene coastal moments. You know, walking along the boardwalk, at the docks, the sound of water lapping at the hull of the tied boats... yeah, that kind of moment.

When I'm painting water, or boats in water, i'm always looking to capture the translucent and reflective qualities of water with few brushstrokes as possible... not always easy. But, i find it's easy for me if i just squint my eyes, block in the lights and darks of the water, then finish off with the highlights. Seems to work most of the time.

With the onset of Spring, lots of creative time in the studio and the art biz picking up, there hasn't been much time to sit in front of the computer. So, I'm taking time to write a quick note today and maybe this will give me the nudge to write more often.

I have an ad in this year's Art & Artists On Ocracoke brochure. The brochure features artists and craftspeople who live and work in or are inspired by Ocracoke Island, NC.

I feel blessed to be associated with a fine group of creatives. My creative buddy, Teressa, her photography and my artwork are on page four... and... Whoo-Hoo!! "Silver Lake Sunset", one of my oil paintings from last year, made the cover!

Also, I may be participating in my first art/crafts festival in June. That's not far away and I'm a little overwhelmed at what needs to be accomplished. But it'll be a great experience, ya can't win if you don't play, right?

"Where to I go when the land touches sea...." One of my favorite lyrics from one of my fav. bands (REM). I think about that line every time I get to the coast. And I think to myself... I just keep going. To get anywhere out here on the Outer Banks, you've got to travel over open water. 23 miles in one direction. At one point, there's no sign of land anywhere. And when the wind is blowing, that can make for a really interesting ride (like the one i was on Friday).

Well, the painting above was from one of my trips over on the ferry. Commercial fishermen doing their thing at the end of the day. This one is my current favorite... more to come.

Wow, I can't believe how much time has passed since my last post! I'm still here, working, painting... and living well! One of the biggest things I've been focusing on is a new studio space. Lots of moving, deconstructing, reconstructing and painting in between... both canvas and walls. So, I'm tired but it's a good kind of tired. I'll actually have storage space! I'm very appreciative. After having worked out of a 12x15ft space for the past year... this is going to be nice.

I'm ringing out as much summertime as I can. The days are getting noticeably shorter, the air is coolish at night, and I'm not ready for summer to be over just yet. So I'm working on a new series of paintings from my summertime experiences. The painting above was from one of my late spring, early summer trips to the outer banks of North Carolina.

It doesn't happen often but this day the water was almost mirror slick. And you could hardly tell where the water stopped and the sky started at the horizon. I couldn't resist rendering the contrast between the soft texture of the water and clouds against the rigid structure of the bow of the boat.

I consider this one my summertime zen painting.

There is so much color in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Winston overall is just a pretty city. As you turn the corner off of Trade street onto Sixth street (right in the middle of the arts district), you'll see Urban Artware (an art gallery that is a must visit!) and 6th and Vine wine bar. To go downtown and not stop in 6th and Vine is a travesty. Stop in. They have over 300 wines by the bottle and 40 wines by the glass. Try it. It'll be good for you.

Another view from a cool little downtown spot. The local symphony regularly performs just across the street from the restaurant. On performance nights, it's fun to get some drinks and sit outside and watch people queue up for their high toned and fancy to-do.

This is the second foreshadowed piece in "Sidebar".

This is another favorite downtown spot for me. My friends bistro features outside dining which is located on the sidewalk next to the street (great place for people watching). To divide the dining space from the sidewalk and street, the owner built dividers using old brass musical instruments. Little touches like that just made it a fun place to hang out.

BTW... this was one of the foreshadowed pieces in the last post.

This was one of my favorite places downtown. Some friends worked at and managed a little bistro that had good wine, good food and great downtown atmosphere. I thought it would be cool to capture a moment when they were bustling around one evening.

There's some built in foreshadowing in this painting. *hint* they're hanging on the post above the table.

I usually don't post works in progress but I thought this might be significant. This painting was inspired by frequent ferry boat trips from the mainland of North Carolina to Ocracoke Island. I was right in the middle of this one today when the news came that a tragic accident occurred in Ocracoke. The truck carrying the fireworks display exploded.

I'm back live in the studio madly creating paintings of ideas brought back from my artistic excursion to the coast. However, I will be ready to get back out and do some live paintings outdoors again very soon!

About this new painting, capturing still waters in the harbor was something I wanted to do for a while now. I could just get lost in the mirror reflection of slick calm waters. This is one of those days where there's no wind and hazy skies cast dim shadows on everything... the kind of day that starts out slow then sort of tapers off.

Today, I ran into a phenomenal plein air painter, Mike Rooney. I happened to be sketching this scene and he was just down the road finishing a painting when we ran into each other. The man is a painting machine and it's worth taking a look at his blog. We decided to paint this scene today and I gotta tell ya this was an eye opener. I'm mainly a studio painter but today I got a taste of imediate, spontaneous paint mixing and painting... and it tasted good. No I wasn't comfortable. The sun was hot, cactus thorns were hiding in the sand, little black bugs were biting. The experience, however was worth it. Just wait till you lay eyes on his airstream trailer painting... I saw it happen!

This sketch was done in Beaufort NC on my way to Ocracoke. I get a creative charge visiting these seaside towns while traveling. I knew that this was going to be a painting when I first saw the scene. When I stepped out of the jeep and turned towards this scene, two dolphins surfaced then disappeared below the water. I didn't see them again. So the dolphins will go in there somewhere.

After many hours of driving, I arrived yesterday at my island studio. Today was spent making my nest and getting the studio space set up. I'll start off by posting sketches made on yesterday's ferryboat ride... 2 1/2 hours on a boat gives one a lot of time to be creative.

I thought I'd come in and clean up some of the cobwebs. A little Art-Biz and a lot of freelance illustration and graphic design work consumed my previous month. So now... I'm off. I'm off to my island getaway to paint, create, meditate... in other words, justify my existence... get some "me" time. My goal is to blog daily with pics, artworks, updates and maybe videos (if i can figure that out).

This is my first dive into the DSFDF challenge by Karin Jurick. It's a coastal scene... I couldn't pass it up. I first discovered Karin's work through Neil Hollingsworth's website before he had a blog back in 2005. I then found that Karin was showing in a gallery that was only two and a half hours away from me. So, of course I high-tail it to the mountains of NC to find this gallery and see her work first hand... I gotta tell ya, ain't nothin' like the real thing.

While spending the past month or so diving head first into the business of art, I did take time to paint some small, quick pieces.

This one was the view from my motel room in Southport, NC right at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. On this particular day, I got up and out early to catch the sunrise. This is what I saw looking out my backdoor... a tugboat slowly navigating the waters with the Bald Head Lighthouse in the distance.

My buddy, in the rain forests of Costa Rica, James Parker, went and pulled a fast one... He took my previous avitar and painted my portrait from that little pic. (see below) If that's not creative, I don't know what is. I love how his portrait makes me look a little more rugged than I really am. You know, like lumberjack rugged or deep-sea fisherman rugged.

Not only did he paint my likeness, but he also created some great paintings of Dean H. and Sheila. Both talented and dedicated artists. Go check them out.
